The Pitt Panthers basketball team today came away with a difficult road win against St. Johns. St. Johns is not a great Big East team but any road win in the conference is worthwhile. This was an especially tricky game against a team that is not going to go to the NCAA tournament unless they win the Big East tournament. Being senior day, this was as big as it is likely to get for the Red Storm. This was the last "home" game for the seniors but they will play at least one more game in Madison Square Garden in the conference tournament.
Pitt won this game with their trademark hard nosed defense holding St. Johns to under 38% shooting and just 2 of 15 from 3 point range. Pitt was efficient on offense shooting over 50% from the field. However, Pitt was outrebounded by the Red Storm 34-28. Nasir Robinson scored 13 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Brad Wanamaker and Travon Woodall each handed out 4 assists.
With this win, the Panthers still have a hold on 3rd place in the Big East. A win in either of their final games against Providence or Rutgers will secure a double bye for the Panthers in the Big East tournament.
