One of the best stories of the year continues to be Cole Hamels. He was much maligned in the offseason for having such a poor regular and postseason last year. There were even rumors of a fight when Brett Myers asked him what he was still doing in the clubhouse after he told a reporter he wanted the seasont to just end. Well, the Hamels that won the world series MVP award is back. 7 innings, 6 baserunners and 7 strikeouts. Finally a win for his brilliant pitching. This was only Hamels 9th win on the season despite a 3.12 ERA.
O the offense. Just another pedestrian night. You keep waiting for this team to follow up one of those offensive juggernaut nights with a hot hitting streak but they only managed 4 hits and 1 run which, in all honesty, should have been unearned. Its time to revist the Ibanez/Francisco platoon. Ibanez got hot for a while and now its earned him trust by Charlie to hit his way out his current slump. With how old Ibanez is, there is no reason not to sit him against lefties who would make for a nice rest for him every few nights.
With the Braves and Giants loss, the Phillies only sit ONE game back of the Braves and are 3 up on the Giants for the WC. With Halladay going at 7 against Bush and with Josh Johnson and Ted Lilly facing the Braves and Giants respectively.
I love baseball fights:
