Game 3 of this series with the Marlins is easily one to forget for Phillies fans, well for the last 5 innings that is. Kyle Kendrick gave up 7 hits in 5 innings and had allowed 3 runs to start the 6th, except only one run was earned and the Phils had a 5-3 lead against the Fish. Then David Herndon came in to keep the score the way it was, fail Herndon, fail. Herndon gave up 2 runs, both of them earned. Errors were a big part of this loss for the Phils as well. Andrew Carpenter still had a one run lead to work with, didn't go that well though. Carpenter allowed an RBI single to Hanley Ramirez in the 8th and the score was tied at 5. The game went to the 10th inning and that's when the guy in this picture, Mike Stanton nailed a walk off homer of Danys Baez. John Mayberry hit two homers in the game and J-Roll added another one, but one of the biggest mistakes of this game in a game where the Phils made 3 errors was one by the 2nd base umpire. He said that Dom Brown missed the second base bag on his triple, which he didn't, the Phils lost a huge scoring chance there which might have affected the outcome of the game.
Ok enough of the negatives from game 3, let's turn to the many positives from games one and two. In game one the Phils Vance Worley did a great job as he shut down the Fish through 7 strong innings while striking out 6. The only run of the game came on a single to center by Michael Martinez to bring in Dom. Game two was a completely different story, well for the Phils offense that is. The Phils pounded out 14 runs against the Fish as Ryan Howard and Ibanez homered along with a 3 run triple by Michael Martinez. The Phils offense has been criticised much this season but they have been nowhere near as bad as they were last season. One thing that I still don't understand is the send down of Vance Worley as John Mayberry was recalled because of the injury to Shane Victorino he sufferend in Toronto which is a thumb sprain. Another injury for the Phils is the one to Placido Polanco. Polly is having back problems and will see a specialist to find out what is exactly wrong.
The next series for the Phils is maybe the most important of the year so far as they face off against the 2nd place Atlanta Braves. Expect a playoff type atmosphere at the Bank as the Braves are only games back in the NL East. The Phils luckily have their big guns for this series as Doc, Cliff, and Cole will go for the Phightins. Now Cole pitching on Sunday means that he can't pitch in the All-Star Game, but with the bad luck Cole has had of late injury wise, maybe it's for the best that he doesn't pitch in the Midsummer Classic. Now you might say why would this series be so important, it's only July? The importance is this, if the Phils are swept by Atlanta (god forbid) the Phils will be behind the Braves in NL East. If the Phils sweep, we're up 5.5 games in the NL East. BIG difference right there, so everybody prepare for some of the most exciting games of the summer and LET'S GO PHILS!
