Phils Break out the Brooms in Colorado
The Phillies continued their hot streak today finishing off the sweep of the Colorado Rockies. The Phils became the first team in baseball to reach 70 wins in 2011 over this series and have taken a commanding 8 game lead in the NL East. Game 1 didn't start out that good though, Cole Hamels allowed a 2 run shot to Seth Smith in the 2nd and the Rockies jumped to a 2-0 lead. The Phils bats couldn't seem to solve Jhoulys Chacin early on either. Then in the 5th inning Hamels loaded the bases with 1 out, then Cole struck out Mark Ellis and Troy Tulowitzki to work out of the jam. Raul Ibanez finally put the Phils on the board in the 7th inning with a double to score Hunter Pence. Colorado got the run back in the bottom of the inning as Chris Ianneta homered to make it 3-1 Rox. It looked like all hope was lost in the 9th until Carlos Ruiz doubled with 2 outs, and then on 3-2, John Mayberry tied the game with a blast to left. Antonio Bastardo shut down the Rockies in the bottom of the 9th then in the 10th Shane Victorino put the Phightins in front 4-3 with a homer to left. Ryan Madson finished off the comeback picking up the save.
In game 2 Kyle Kendrick turned in his best game of the year going 8 shutout innings while striking out 7. Ryan Howard belted 2 homers in the game and Hunter Pence, Chase Utley, and Brian Schneider tacked on a run each as the Phils shut out the Rockies 5-0. Now this might have been Kyle Kendrick's last start for a while as Roy Oswalt could be returning very soon which would spell the end for Kendrick in the rotation should Oswalt stay healthy.
Game 3 of this series was the slugfest, Roy Halladay struggled early and just never seemed on his game yesterday. Luckily the offense had his back as the Phils pounded out 8 runs. Hunter Pence got the scoring started for the Phils with a sac fly in the first, but the Rockies took the lead with 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning. But in the top of the 2nd the Phils would take the lead and never look back, Jimmy Rollins singled to bring in Chooch and then Ryan Howard made up for his error in the first which lead to a run, and for striking out with the bases loaded and nobody out by launching a 3 run shot to left center. The feel good story of the day though, Brad Lidge came in for the save and got the job done as he picked up his 100th as a Phillie. Brad will always have a special place in the hearts of all Phillies fans for what he did in 08, and he's been a classy guy throughout the situation of him losing the closer's job. Thanks Brad for all you've done for the Phils!
Now begins a huge series for the Phils, 4 games in San Fran. The Phillies lost 2 out of 3 to the Giants in the series in Philly, time for redemption for that series, and for the NLCS last year. The Phils send out Cliff Lee, Vance Worley, Cole Hamels, and Roy Oswalt is scheduled to make his return in game 4 vs Tim Lincecum. That'll be a fun game for sure. The Phillies have a chance to extend their lead in the NL East this series and somewhat prove that they're better than the Giants. LET'S GO PHILS!!
