The Phils won the 4 game series with Chicago today by coming back down 3-1 to win 4-3. The game got off to a bad start when Roy Oswalt gave up 3 first inning runs, 2 coming on a 2 run shot by one of the many Phillie killers Aramis Ramirez. Ryan Howard started his great game off in the bottom of the first when he got a RBI double to deep center off of lefty Doug Davis. The Phils tacked another run on in the 3rd when Raul Ibanez singled into right to bring home Chase Utley. The score would stay that way until the 7th as both Oswalt and Davis were dealing. In the 7th the Cubs brought in lefty Sean Marshall who is having a great year, that's when the Phils got the bats going. Shane Victorino lead off by getting hit by a pitch, Chase got a double to right field and the big man Howard finished it off with a 2 run single up the middle. Michael Stutes shut down the Cubs in the 8th by striking out two. And Ryan Madson finished off the Cubbies even though it was a nail biter. Madson got the first two outs easily but then Koye Hill got a single to right and Geovany Soto came close to driving one out but hit it fould down the left field line. Soto popped one up into shallow right where Superman, a.k.a Chase Utley made a great running grab to end the game and give the Phils a 3-1 series win over the Cubs.
While the offense wasn't at their best today but the way they performed in games two and three of this series is a good sign. Chase is getting hot and is looking like the Chase of old. Ryan went 3-3 with 3 RBI's. People might complain about Howard not hitting for average, but as long as he drives in runs, he can hit .220 for all I care. The Phils need these guys to hit, and hopefully this series means that they will be for the rest of the year.
Now while people might be encouraged by Chase's performence of late, Charlie still needs to make sure they ease him in slowly. We want Chase for September and hopefully October too, not just for the summer. As for Howard, his numbers are slowly getting better and today definately helped. The homeruns might not be where they usually are at this point, but don't worry, Ryan will get his homers, the guy is too good to not get them.
After blowing his first save of 2011 on Thursday in the first game of the series against Chicago, Madson came back nicely today and picked up the save. Before interleague play starts the Phils have a 4 game series with the Fish. They have a double header on Wednesday though as reports are that Kendrick and Halladay will start the two games. I still don't understand why Kendrick is still with the team, but hopefully he'll do a good job on Wednesday. After the series with Florida the Phils head to Seattle for the first time since 05. The series starts on Tuesday as Cole Hamels takes to the hill. LET'S GO PHILS!
