Day 1 of the Legg Mason tournament began with Santiago Giraldo facing off against a much more formidable opponent in Xavier Malisse. After Malisse held serve at love, Giraldo also held serve but nothing could stop the heavens from letting forth a storm. We await the courts being dried and hopefully some sun for the later afternoon.
When we first arrived we saw Jon Isner finishing up his practice session. He spoke to some fans afterwards about the upcoming NFL season and his favorite players.
Now onto a topic that I am more familiar with. The art of the ball man. Here at Legg Mason they refer to the ball people as ball kids. I am a 30 year old ball man. I am not a kid and there were some other ball collectors that are older than childrens age. Second, they roll the ball from the back line to the net and then from the net to the server's back line. At the Open the ball people throw the ball the length of the tennis court. More places should implement the overhand throw. It is much more efficient.
