J.C Romero Designated For Assignment
Today the Philadelphia Phillies designated relief pitcher, J.C Romero for assignment.
Romero was a part of the 2008 World Series team and contributed to in many ways to the Phillies getting there. However, his past also has flaws with suspension and injruy.
This season and last season, Romero has not been as dominant as he used to be. After pitching a total of just 16.1 innings this season, Romero has let up 6 runs, has an ERA of 3.86 and a WHIP of 1.71.
Ruben Amaro Jr. came out an spoke on the topic stating that the transaction was made to make room for Vance Worley.
He said it was a hard decision to make, but it was the right one.
Charlie Manuel also commented on the significance of Antonio Bastardo, “The development of [Antonio] Bastardo definitely took away from his time. J.C. has to pitch to get sharp, his command is a problem, he needs to work on it.”
When Romero was asked how he felt he replied, “It was a bit of a surprise, to be honest with you. You always need two lefties in the pen, it doesn’t matter who," then Romero went on to say, "I planted a seed in Bastardo, he’s doing great and I wished him the best of luck. Sometimes the student does better than the teacher.”
It is clear that both Manuel and Amaro want to go young and get ready for the future. It seems as if Romero is starting to lose his niche for the game and Worley and Bastardo are on the rise.
Rumor Mill: Yes, rumors are already starting to heat up as it has been reported by numerous sources that the St. Louis Cardinals have expressed interest in him.
