Break out the Brooms! Phils Sweep the Marlins
What a series. Today the Phils finished off the four game sweep of the Florida Marlins with a two hit shutout by Cliff Lee. Lee was dominant on the mound and at the plate. Lee drove in the first run of the ballgame with an RBI double to give the Phils a 1-0 lead, which in the end would really be the only run he needed. Ryan Hoawrd tacked on a solo shot to left for his 15th homerun of 2011. Howard's bat is getting hot like the rest of the Phils lineup. J-Roll added on the last run of the ballgame with a bloop RBI double to right and Lee shut down the Fish the rest of the way.
Since I gave a recap on game 1 of this series I'll skip to yesterday. Kyle Kendrick schocked the world with a good outing in game one of the double header as the Phils offense pounded out 8 runs for KK. 6 of those runs came during a 6 run 3rd inning when Wilson Valdez got a bases loaded triple, and later when J-Roll picked up his 6th homer of 2011 with a 3 run shot. Kendrick and the bullpen shut down the Marlins the rest of the way. In game 2 the Marlins jumped on Roy Halladay in the first when Gaby Sanchez got a 2 run homer off Halladay. Chase Utley doubled to make it 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning. John Buck made it 4-1 with a 2 run single to center in the 4th inning. Chase cut the lead in half in the 5th win a RBI triple to score Shane Victorino. Halladay and Anibal Sanchez shut down each team the rest of the way until the bottom of the 9th when the Phils began the rally against Florida closer Leo Nunez. Chooch and Ross Gload singled with one down and then just when it looked like the Phils might have the bases loaded with one out. J-Roll's sharp grounder hit Nunez and it ended up being runners at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. But Shane came through and tied the game with a single into center. The Phils failed to get Shane home and we went to extras. Madson shut down the Fish in the top half of the 10th and in the bottom half, Ryan got hit by a pitch, then with 2 outs D-Brown walked, and finally to complete the comeback, Chooch singled to center to bring home the winning run and give the Phils a 5-4 win.
Tommorow the Phils start the June stint of Interleague Play against the Seattle Mariners. The Phils will face maybe the best 3 pitchers on Seattle's staff. Michael Pineda, a really good young pitcher with a blazing fastball will go in game 1. King Felix Hernandez will go in game 2, we all know how good he is, and a decent pitcher in Jason Vargas will go for the Mariners in game 3. As for the Phils they'll send out, in order, Roy Oswalt, Vance Worley will make a spot start, and King Cole goes in game 3. The last time the Phils faced Seattle was 2005 and they lost 2 out of 3 to the M's. But obviously both teams have changed a bit since then. LET'S GO PHILS!!
