I wanted to include a youtube clip or some other video clip from the first game of the World Cup: Mexico vs. South Africa but the streaming from espn360 was amateurish at best. I am not sure who is streaming this content but that company is highly overrated (ahem, Akamai--is it you?). It is 2010 and we can't get clear internet content of the biggest sporting event in the world delivered clearly and timely to our computer? This has to be a joke, right? Well another hour exists before the next game, here is to hoping these computer programmers and whoever else is involved in figuring out the logistics of getting the fans live soccer can do it better soon!
But the bigger joke were on fans that beleived the World Cup would have competant referees and linesman. After a strong corner and a couple of headers, a Mexican player finally finished the play by putting the ball in the back of the net. After a very short Mexican celebration, the linesman's flag was up and the goal was called off for off-sides. The only problem with the call was that there was a South African outfield player on the goal line. How the linesman missed this call is beyond me. I want to think that the linesman was not playing favorites for the host nation South Africa but such an egregiously bad call is unacceptable at this high a level, or any level for that matter.
